ECHO – Cultural Heritage Online

Description “ECHO – Cultural Heritage Online” is an open access infrastructure for the Humanities. ECHO’s open repository includes more than 206,600 catalogued documents comprising more than 890,000 high-resolution images of historical and cultural source documents and artifacts, about 240 video sequences, and 57,000 full-texts in several languages, 70 seed collections in several disciplines and thematic fields, in particular in the history of science. These documents have been made available by more than 170 institutions from 24 countries worldwide. The ECHO infrastructure includes workflows for the digitization of cultural heritage, as well as viewer and working environments for analyzing and annotating the digital objects and for publishing scholarly commentaries directly linked to the sources. The ECHO initiative is characterized by its strict open access policy. All sources and scholarly publications related to the material will be made openly available under CC licences. ECHO has been presented at many international forums as a best practice example of an open access environment for the Humanities.
