| Description | The Scientific Open Access Repository of Portugal (RCAAP) was born on July 2008 and it is sponsored by UMIC and operated by FCCN (a branch of FCT, the Foundation for Science and Technology) with support of the University of Minho. RCAAP provides a set of integrated activities addressing not only technical services but also support services, communication and training and, of course, open access dissemination and advocacy. RCAAP is also an important vehicle to gather a network of institutions and people working with the same goal and sharing experiences and best practices. The most well known electronic services RCAAP delivers are the national aggregator and IR, but other services like scientific journals, scientific data, the metadata validator and the directory of Portuguese and Brazilian open access IR and journals are also provided. Since RCAAP started, there has been remarkable progress in the open access movement in Portugal: the network of repositories of academic and research institutions expanded significantly, the number of policies and mandates increased, the portfolio of electronic services was augmented and there was a considerable success in mobilizing the academic community.
