Research Infrastructure

MedAustron

Description MedAustron is a centre designed for ion-beam therapy and non-clinical research. Therefore the objectives are the treatment of cancer patients and the availability for performing non-clinical research experiments. After the centre’s completion in 2015, it will be possible to treat up to 1400 patients annually using protons and carbon ion radiation. Currently only three centres worldwide offer these two radiation treatment options at the same location. MedAustron is owned by the province of Lower Austria and has been partly funded by the republic of Austria, the province of Lower Austria and the city of Wiener Neustadt. Currently, the facility is under construction and should be available for research purposes in the beginning of 2016. A board will be established which will decide on the research proposals and the corresponding beam times. The detailed procedure will be finalised in the upcoming years.
