Research Infrastructure

Italian Grid Initiative

Description IGI is the Italian NGI (National Grid Initiative) and is part of the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI). It is an EU Joint Research Unit (JRU), based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the members in December 2007, and formally supported by the Italian Ministry for University and Research (MIUR) and the European Commission. It offers more than 30000 cpu cores and about 17 PB of disk space distributed across more than 50 computing centres all over Italy to a wide variety of user communities at both national and international levels. Access to the grid resources and services is uniform all over the infrastructure and is managed by means of X.509 personal certificates. The IGI grid infrastructure is based on the resource sharing paradigm: resources are available to all participants (even if they do not provide resources) with different priorities. Resource owners have the highest priority on their resources while the others can use them on a best effort basis. IGI resources can be used by national, European and international users, provided they have been registered to one or more supported Virtual Organizations.
