World Data Center for Marine Environmental Sciences

Description WDC-MARE was founded in 2001 as a member of the World Data Center System (WDC) which came into existence as a result of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957-58. Their purpose was to ensure that observational data from the IGY programme would be readily available to scientist of all countries. The arrangement became permanent under the auspices of the International Council of Sciences (ICSU) and has remained so to the present time. WDCs conduct international exchange of geoscientific and environmental information in accordance with the principles of the ICSU Panel on World Data Centers. As one of more than 50 WDCs around the world, WDC-MARE provides a focus on data and information from marine environmental research and facilitates the international collection and exchange of all forms of marine data. In establishing new ways of publishing scientific data with persistent identifiers, WDC-MARE was the first center using the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to automatically register data sets as part of a full bibliographic citation. WDC-MARE participates in the IOC/UNESCO International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) and cooperates with the International Ocean Drilling Program (IODP).
