Description | The research infrastructure ECOTRONS is dedicated to the study of ecosystems, organisms and biodiversity responses to environmental changes by means of experimentation. Part of the CNRS Large Instruments programme, it is run by a team of 15 research engineers and technicians and is open to the scientific community through calls for projects. The RI ECOTRONS constitutes two sites, the European Ecotron of Montpellier and Ecotron IleDeFrance. The mission of ECOTRONS is to provide the scientific community with innovative and technologically sound experimental platforms to advance knowledge of the functioning of ecological systems. By confining ecosystems in chambers, it is possible to simulate a broad range of environmental conditions (temperature, water conditions, CO2, ...) and to measure fluxes generated by the ecosystem, as well as to close elements' budgets for carbon and nitrogen. The European Ecotron of Montpellier consists of three experimental platforms of decreasing dimensions: the macrocosm, mesocosms (under construction) and microcosms. The Ecotron IIeDeFrance consists of a modular controlled environmental facility (Ecolab) and aquatic microcosms under construction. |
